History

Bend Oregon was originally founded as a logging town in the early 1900s and was incorporated in 1905. Through the logging years, the town was home to two logging mills where many residents in and around town where employed, in fact, these two mills supported most of the town until they closed in the 1990s. When the mills closed, it opened up an opportunity for a developer to come in and purchase the land and the rights to the riverbanks that were depleted by years of mismanagement. Today, this area is called the Old Mill District where everybody enjoys the various shops, restaurants and pubs as well as the beautiful riverbanks that have been named as an eco system, meaning that nobody is allowed to do anything that would disrupt the native species. People of all ages enjoy the fish ladder where you can view the fish, otters and mink as well as various types of birds.

Activities/ Things to Do

The beauty of Bend is that it does not matter what time of year it is, there is always something to do that lets you enjoy nature. In the winter, Mt. Bachelor is a hot spot for skiers and from Washington, Oregon and California. The ski resort is known as one of the premier destination ski resort in the region and provides access to over 3600 acres of world-class skiing. The summer is also a hot spot for the mountain where hikers enjoy the chair lift that remains open for those who want to hike or bike on the mountain. Mt. Bachelor has been open since the 1950s.

Skiing Bend is located on the Eastern Side of the Cascade Mountains in Central Oregon. With this location comes extreme natural beauty. One of the best places that people go to enjoy this beauty is the Cascade Lakes Highway, otherwise known as Forest Route 46 which runs through both Deschutes and Klamath Counties where it provides some of the most beautiful scenes in the country. The highway goes through various mountainous areas with pristine views of Mount Bachelor. Various mountain lakes are located along the highway providing more scenery and nature.

Events

Throughout the year, residents and visitors of Bend enjoy various activities and events. Santa land typically starts around the first part of December and runs until Christmas Eve in the Old Mill District and always proves to be a favorite.
